A STRATEGIC APPROACH TO WEED PROBLEMS
OF
NATIONAL SIGNIFICANCE

The National Weeds Strategy Executive Committee operated for a five year term, having implemented much of the NWS and passed their role to the AWC on 30 June 2002. It ceased to exist from that date.

Three ministerial councils endorsed and launched the National Weeds Strategy (NWS) in June 1997 in order to bring a strategic focus to weed management across Australia. The three councils, Agriculture and Resource Management Council Of Australia and New Zealand, Australian and New Zealand Environment and Conservation Council and Forestry Ministers formed The National Weeds Strategy Executive Committee(NWSEC) to oversee the implementation of the strategy.

The Committee reported to the Councils annually on progress and refered significant issues to them for endorsement. This committee dealt with high level policy issues and liaised closely with Australian Weeds Committee (AWC) for technical advice.

It should be noted that the Ministerial Councils were restructured at about the time the Committee ceased operation and this new structure is included in the AWC page.
