NATIONAL WEEDS STRATEGY
(currently under review)
|
The National Weeds Strategy (NWS) is currently being reviewed and revised and is to be renamed the Australian Weed Strategy. The period of public consultation and comment is now closed. The current National Weeds Strategy (NWS) was launched in June 1997, by three Ministerial Councils; Agriculture and Resource Management Council of Australia and New Zealand, Australian and New Zealand Environment and Conservation Council and Forestry Ministers. It takes a strategic approach to weed management problems of national significance, addressing environmental and agricultural weeds equally. The NWS describes the nature of the problem, discusses why existing weed management measures are not adequate, lists the roles and responsibilities of government, community, landowners and land users. It lists three goals with underpinning objectives and strategies, which are to be addressed by the Executive Committee and government at all levels in tackling this form of land degradation. This link takes you to a summary of the NWS goals, objectives and strategies which have been extracted from the Strategy document. Hard copy of the National Weeds Strategy is now out of print, but is available on the web from the Natural Resource Management Ministerial Council web site. A report on the implementation of the strategy over the period 1997 to 2002 can be downloaded in PDF format by clicking on the link below:
