Cadagi

Corymbia torelliana

Family: Myrtaceae.

Form: Tree

Origin: Native of rainforest and rainforest margins in northern Queensland.

Flowers/Seedhead: With buds 8–9 mm long, 5–6 mm wide. Flowers spring.

Description: Tree to 30 m high. Leaves with lateral veins at wide angle to midvein and with vein near leaf margin, small visible glands present. Fruit 8–10 mm long and wide. Seeds red-brown, small.

Distinguishing features: Distinguished by rough grey to black fibrous bark on the lower trunk and smooth and green above; juvenile leaves ovate, alternate, surfaces of different colour, attached by a leaf stalk that joins the leaf away from the margin (peltate), leaf veins and leaf stalk hairy; older leaves alternate, ovate to

Dispersal: lanceolate, 9–16 cm long, 1.5–6.5 cm wide, surfaces of slightly different colour, on stalk 0.5–2 cm long, inflorescence consisting of 3 or 7 flowers in an umbel; buds ovoid; cap (operculum) of buds a half-sphere that is slightly pointed; buds and fruit on a stalk 5–20 mm long; fruit ovoid and with 3 valves well below rim of the fruit; stamens numerous, white to cream.

Confused With: Spread by seed, some moved by stingless native bees.

Notes:

References:

    The species is frost sensitive. It is planted as an ornamental and for wind breaks. At one time used for timber but not now due to its relative rarity. It is now considered to be a weed in much of its introduced range. Hybrids with other Corymbia species are being developed for timber production in northern NSW and Queensland.
