Family: Asteraceae.

Form: Herb

Origin: Native of South America.

Flowers/Seedhead: In numerous heads. Flowers most of year.

Description: Erect pale grey annual herb to 1 m high. Stems with long spreading hairs. Leaves with short hairs facing toward the leaf apex and longer spreading hairs; basal leaves elliptic to narrow lanceshaped, 49 cm long, 0.51.5 cm wide, margins toothed to obscurely toothed; upper stem leaves elliptic to linear, 26 cm long, 0.20.6 cm wide, margins entire. Seeds elliptic, about 1 mm long, with short hairs and topped with long white hairs (pappus) about 3 mm long.

Distinguishing features: Distinguished by side branches of inflorescence often overtopping the main axis; heads 56 mm long; bracts around heads hairy with some long hairs at apex; pappus white or pink; receptacle smooth-pitted.

Dispersal: Spread by seed via wind and water.

Confused With: Other Conyza species and Aster squamatus (Aster subulatus misapplied). Conyza sumatrensis, tall fleabane, is another common Conyza. It has a rough pitted receptacle. Other Conyza and Aster species do not have the same combination of features as that listed in the Distinguished section.

Notes: Widespread in pasture, horticulture, wasteland and urban areas. Appears to be expanding its range. It is a crop weed that is particularly serious in no-till farming systems. Conyza bonariensis occurs in tropical to warm temperate regions of the world, including in New Zealand, South Africa, Kenya, Tanzania, the USA and Europe.
