Reducing the Impact of Weeds

Weeds of National Significance priorities by species



The Caring for our Country Business Plan 2010-11 encourages proponents to talk to Weeds of National Significance (WoNS) coordinators to ensure that proposal are consistent with the national strategic plan for each WoNS species. (Pg 49 of the Caring for our Country Business Plan 2010—11)

To help you we have summarised priorities for each WONS species by NRM Region, which can be viewed here ALL WoNS National Priorities by NRM Region 2010 finalized 1-3-10.xls. More extensive information for each WoNS species can be accessed through the species links below. There are also species management maps which have been aligned with the Caring For Our Country Business plan. We also suggest that your application considers the following:

  1. Demonstrate links to Australian Weeds Strategy at http://www.weeds.gov.au/publications/strategies/weed-strategy.html.
  2. Demonstrate links to the individual weeds National Strategy and address priorities through the National Priority Framework.
  3. Show input, or willingness to input into national mapping.
  4. Use national core attributes for data collection http://www.weeds.org.au/docs/National_Core_Attributes_for_Weed_Mapping.pdf and where appropriate use the preferred list of attributes for your WoNS if available.
  5. Tackling one or more of the high priority management areas.
  6. Demonstrate project is at landscape scale and in collaboration with other stakeholders and jurisdictions.
  7. An ability to monitor and report on change.
  8. Demonstrate you have a long term possibility of success.
  9. Link to Caring for our Country national priority areas and targets (described under Reducing the Impact of Weeds of National Significance under the Caring For Our Country Business Plan 2010-11, pp 47-49 http://www.nrm.gov.au/business-plan/10-11/).
  10. Aligned with National Best Practice and Management Guides.
  11. Consult with the relevant National WONS Coordinator.
WoNS Coordinators are available and willing to advise on the relevance of proposals to their respective national strategies and may be able to assist you in identifying stakeholders for your proposal. Coordinators provide assistance relevant to their weeds national strategy and have no involvement with Caring For Our Country processes and cannot provide assistance in this area.
