CARING FOR OUR COUNTRY

Reducing the Impact of Weeds

Weeds of National Significance priorities by species

The Caring for our Country Business Plan 2012-13 requires proponents to talk to Weeds of National Significance (WoNS) coordinators early in the process of developing proposals that address the target “Reducing the impact of Weeds of National Significance”. This is to ensure that proposals against this target are consistent with the national strategic plan for each WoNS species, adopt nil-tenure weed management approaches and align with priorities under the Australian Weeds Strategy.

The WoNS Coordinators have summarised priorities for each WoNS species by NRM Region, which can be viewed here: WoNS_National_Priorities_by_NRM_Region_December-2011.xls. More extensive information for each WoNS species can be accessed through the species links below. There are also national management action maps for each WoNS species that have been published as part of the Caring For Our Country Business plan. We also suggest that your application considers the following:

  1. Demonstrate links to Australia’s Biodiversity Conservation Strategy 2010–2030 at http://www.environment.gov.au/biodiversity/strategy/index.html.
  2. Demonstrate links to Australian Weeds Strategy at www.weeds.gov.au/publications/strategies/weed-strategy.html.

  4. Demonstrate links to the individual weeds National Strategy and address priorities through the National Priority Framework.
  5. Show how the project will provide input into national mapping.
  6. Use national core attributes for data collection (www.weeds.org.au/docs/National_Core_Attributes_for_Weed_Mapping.pdf) and use the preferred list of attributes for each WoNS if available.
  7. Demonstrate project is at landscape scale and in collaboration with other stakeholders and jurisdictions.
  8. Demonstrate you have a long term possibility of success.
