Funding Priorities for the National Blackberry Program

  1. National Co-ordination (co-ordinate National Blackberry Taskforce and projects managing blackberry mitigation on a national scale)
  2. Research (as per list below)
  3. Identification of blackberry species. · includes identification training
  4. Mapping extent and density of blackberry species
  5. Nationally Consistent Extension & Communication
  6. Nationally Strategic On-ground control (States/Territories and Catchment Management Authority Regions are expected to fund on-ground management to realistic levels.)
    1. Prioritise areas for Blackberry control.
    2. Eradication of outliers through' best practice management' in areas with high Community support.
    3. Incentive program.

Research Priorities

  1. Know the species
    • (Further train in identification of blackberry taxa and introduce mapping of taxa, rather than blackberry aggregate).
  2. Mapping of blackberry taxa.
    • Herbariums to do with Community bringing in samples
  3. Ecological studies re the blackberry taxa.
  4. New tool development
    1. Chemical studies (herbicide trials, techniques, selectivity).
    2. Filling the gaps for biological control agents.
  5. Scoping study for feasibility of new GM (GM blackberry, & GM biocontrol agents)
  6. Early warning rapid response of blackberry taxa.
  7. Release of additional rust strains expanded from limited releases in NSW and WA to national releases en masse ($841,203 received from DTWM for this project) (CSIRO - Louise Morin ACT).
