Australian Weeds Research and Development Projects from 2007 to 2011

A database of Australian research and development projects related to weeds, for the period 2007 to June 2010 has been compiled and is available via the link below as an Excel spreadsheet. The database contains 297 records of research and development projects, which represents approximately 90% of all projects undertaken.

The database will be periodically updated as references come to hand.

The most significant R&D providers are the CSIRO (32.3%) and CRC for Australian Weed Management (29.3%). Although these statistics are confounded as the CSIRO would be included in the CRCAWM projects, while it was in operation between 2007 and mid 2008. This organization would also have represented most states and territories over that period (partner organizations).

It was not possible to identify costs for the projects and hence total value, because many will be comprise of grants with matching in kind contributions, often not including fixed overhead costs which can be substantial for scientific R&D.

For additional searches we recommend Trove which covers a wider range of documents than the above database. The single search covers print and online theses as well as journal articles and books enabling a comprehensive picture of researchers’ public work. Trove can be found at http://trove.nla.gov.au.

Monitoring Manual: for bitou bush control and native plant recovery

This manual has been produced by NSW Dept of Environment and Climate Change and outlines how to monitor the response of bitou bush and the native species at risk from bitou bush control. The manual is divided into 3 tiers (standard, advanced and research) to accommodated a range of stakeholder skills and their availability of resources (time and money). Each tier can be downloaded separately from the website, along with datasheets and how to undertake simple analysis. The methods were field tested on a wide range of stakeholders and were spent out to a range of people for comment. For more information please follow the link below.

Whilst this manual is aimed at bitou bush, specifically for ensuring implementation of the Bitou Bush Threat Abatement Plan, the manual has been made as generic as possible and applicable to other weeds that threaten biodiversity. The Department proposes to produce a revised version for all weeds sometime in 2010.

Defeating the Weeds Menace Research and Development Presentations 2009, Presented by Land & Water Australia

Defeating the Weed Menace was a national program established by the Australian Government in 2004. The goals of the research component of Defeating the Weed Menace program were:
    • Generation of knowledge to prevent the development of new weed problems
    • To reduce the impacts of existing weeds of national priority
    • To build the capacity of weed management into the future

Judy Lambert, the Defeating the Weed Menace R&D Coordinator worked with state-based Weed Societies to present the program and has put together each jurisdiction's specific presentations.

Choose your state or territory to view research that is particularly relevant to you. Each presentation has been customised to suit the specific jurisdiction.

National Training Competencies for Weed Management

Education Kits for Schools

"Weedbusters - Activities, Information and Curriculum Links", a refreshing approach to weed education, suitable for classroom and outdoor focus.

This publication is an attempt to bring the weeds message to an extremely important group of people - students, the land and water managers of the very near future.

This Weedbusters book provides diverse activities and information that will encourage students to explore weeds from a number of perspectives - beginning with their own.

Activities offer many learning outcomes, particularly in Science and SOSE at curriculum levels 3,4 and 5.
